Diet and Spinal Health

One major impact to spinal health that often gets overlooked is diet.

Nutrition can impact the body in many ways, but for your spine, it is crucial for ensuring that your muscles and bones are strong and healthy. Below is a list of some of the vitamins and nutrients, and food that they are found in, that will strengthen your muscles and spine, thus preventing injury.

Calcium: Yogurt, cheese, milk, kale, bok choy, legumes, sardines, salmon, almonds, oranges, and tofu.

Vitamin C: Strawberries, kiwis, oranges, grapefruits, tomatoes, broccoli, spinach, red and green peppers, and sweet potatoes.

Magnesium: Leafy greens, fish, beans, seeds, nuts, whole grains, yogurt, avocados, bananas, and dark chocolate.

Iron: Pork, fish, shellfish, red meat, poultry, leafy greens, lentils, beans, soy, eggs, and whole grains.

Vitamin D3: Salmon and egg yolks. There are also several cereals, juices, bread, and milk where vitamin D3 is added.

Vitamin K2: Healthy fats of meat, cheeses, egg yolks, and dairy products. Vitamin K1 can be found in spinach, kale, and broccoli.

Vitamin B12: Eggs, fish, poultry, meat products, milk, yogurt, and cheese.

In addition to consumption of the above nutrients, it is also important to do the following:

Drink plenty of water

Limit your caffeine intake (coffee, soft drinks, energy drinks, etc.)

Reduce salt intake

Avoid smoking and alcohol

If your diet restricts you from obtaining any of the above nutrients, you can also obtain them through supplements available over the counter. Remember, always consult your doctor before drastically changing your diet or taking nutritional supplements.
